Limassol after 1974: the city that had to grow fast
How displacement and relocated commerce turned a market town into Cyprus's economic capital.
Sudden demand
The events of 1974 displaced a large population and moved port, tourism and much commercial activity to the south coast. Limassol absorbed both, and the building industry expanded to meet a demand it had never planned for.
The legacy stock
Much of the city's 1970s and 1980s housing was built quickly and to the codes of its day. It is why so much of Limassol's renovation market is about insulation, waterproofing and seismic assessment rather than kitchens.
