Seismic design in Cyprus: what changed and when
Why the year a Limassol building was designed matters more than its condition.
A seismic island
Cyprus sits in an active zone and has adopted progressively stricter seismic provisions, now under the Eurocode framework with national annexes. Detailing, reinforcement ratios and irregularity rules are far tighter than they were in the 1970s.
Practical consequence
Two apartments of identical appearance and different decades are not the same asset. Buyers of older stock should commission a structural assessment; buyers of new build should confirm which code edition the design was certified against.
