Water, shade, materials, embodied carbon and the passive measures that actually work in a Mediterranean climate.
Passive before technical
Orientation, shading, cross-ventilation, thermal mass and window-to-wall ratio decide most of a building's energy use before a single system is specified. Solar panels on a badly oriented, poorly insulated building are a subsidy for a design error.
Water is the local constraint
Cyprus is water-scarce. Drought-tolerant planting, drip irrigation, low-flow fittings and, where feasible, greywater reuse matter more here than in most European markets.
Materials
Locally sourced aggregate and stone reduce transport emissions and, in Limassol, tend to age better in salt air than imported alternatives.
