Amathus, the ancient city east of Limassol
One of Cyprus's oldest royal cities, on the coast road toward Agios Tychonas.
Why it matters
Amathus was among the island's principal city-kingdoms, occupied from roughly the eleventh century BC. The agora, the acropolis and the sanctuary of Aphrodite are visible, with parts of the harbour now submerged.
Visiting
It sits directly on the eastern tourist road, making it the easiest ancient site in the city to reach on foot from the beach hotels.
